Hello again,

There is this mega-super-cool website called If You Make It, all about indie and punk music. I am going to be doing a monthly page-long comic for this site, the first of which was posted today. Click the banner below to read my comic, and while you're there be sure to poke around, there are some awesome videos, which feature bands like the Measure SA, Lemuria, and the Ergs!

Hey Lizbians,

Ever wonder what I'm listening to while I slave away at the drafting table? Well, now you can hear for yourself, through the magic of THE INKSTUDS MIXTAPE. Robin McConnell does an awesome comics podcast, which I was interviewed for back in 2007, and basically every comic artist you've ever wanted to talk to has done a show with him. Now he has this great thing called the INKSTUDS MIXTAPE, in which comic artists make an hour long play list of their favourite songs, and you can listen to it right there on his website. So go, listen, and I hope you enjoy

Hello dudes and lady dudes,

I am offering a new service for your enjoyment, here is the press release from my webstore

New for the 2009 holiday season: customized greeting cards! For a measly $10 I will go to the store, pick out a cheesy hallmark card, customize it with a personalized drawing, and send it to the recipient of your choice. For no extra charge I will make sure they know it’s from you, and you’ll get all the credit. Your friends and family will never feel more loved then when they get a card in the mail from a famous (not really famous) comics celebrity! It’s the perfect gift for thanksgiving, Hanukkah, birthdays, and any other card-giving occasion. Please email me (lizprincepower(at)hotmail.com)after ordering to let me know who the card is going to, and if you have any special requests (sorry, I will not do portraits at this time, all greetings will involve a drawing of myself in some way).

Yeah guys! You can send your friends greeting cards from Liz Prince! I look forward to saying hello to strangers via the time honoured tradition of paper mail.

for the once in every 3 years occassion that I use my livejournal to discuss my opinions

I absolutely detest the Metro as a newspaper (with the exception that for a hot second they were running the Swedish comic strip Rocky, before they realized how racy it was; and the last time I checked they were running Hutch Owen, which is cool), so I was not surprised to see over someone's shoulder this morning a headline that read "Study: Organics not really better for you" with a sub caption informing everyone to stop buying Organic and save their money ("If you’re buying organic, save your money. A new study shows organic food is no better for you than regular food."). The article is short, but sites a study done in the UK that shows that Organic food is not significantly more nutritious than what they called "regular food". Huh. Here is the metro article:

http://www.metro.us/us/article/2009/07/30/02/3605-82/index.xml

Top-notch sensational journalism.

To find the real news, you have to go the Times UK website:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6732520.ece

which states that there were no studies of the effects of pesticides or chemicals, they were merely comparing the level of nutrients in Organically farmed and conventionally grown produce, which, apparently across the board, proved to be higher in Organic food, but not at a level that would be beneficial to the general public. Additionally, the study seems to be controversial abroad, and is being criticized for preempting a study that is finding that Organic food has higher levels of antioxidants. There are also accounts that Organic food flat out tastes better.

So why does the Metro have an article telling people to stop buying Organic food?

I don't normally get on a soap box about my political beliefs, but in this case, I will make an exception, as I feel that a lot of what is wrong with our country ethically tends to show itself most blatantly in our commercialized food industry. It takes advantage of consumers, the government, it's employees, and our natural resources, and gives almost nothing back. To me buying Organic is not about nutrition, but about trying to contribute to the industry that is quite obviously the lesser of, what some could claim, are two evils.

And then I see a headline like the one in the Metro today, and I get that sinking-in-my-gut-feeling of utter hopelessness, knowing that, for the "general public", a headline like that could likely convince them to stop buying Organic. Of course, I realize that not everyone reads the Metro, and that not everyone believes what is reported in the Metro if they do read it, and who's to say that anyone readin the Metro buys Organic food anyway, but I can only imagine that other national news sources will have a field day with this, and that industrial farming industry will exploit these findings to the end that they can claim they are "as healthy" as Organic, despite the fact the study really didn't address the chemical alterations of conventionally grown food at all.

That's all I really have to say: that I think it's unfair that articles are allowed to make broad general statements and leave out important issues, and that it makes me feel like crawling into bed, never to come out.

Hourly Comics Day 2009

Remember Hourly Comics day waaaaaayyyy back in February? Well, I participated by drawing a 3 panel strip for every hour of the day, including the ones when I was asleep, but I didn't finish it until a few days ago. Better late than never, right? To view all 24 strips from February 1st, 2009, simply click the comic below, kicking things off at 12am!

My comics cross paths with Maris Wicks' hourly comics

psst: the comic is at the bottom of the page under UNPUBLISHED WORK, titled "Hourly comic 2009"
